Miso Sick

Last night after work, I met my friend Kristina and we got mani-pedi’s at a new nail salon that had a Groupon special!

This picture was obviously taken from the bed today. I started feeling sore all over my body last night while at work and during our salon session. I ended up going out to eat anyway because we had plans with our friends Mike and Carrie (who are engaged and Kristina and I are both in the wedding this summer) to goto a new Hibachi place in town. We had an 8:00 reservation but did not get seated until 8:30.

I ordered soup to start, hoping that it would make me feel a little better.

Then, I ordered scallops and shrimp. I know they always give you 2 appetizer shrimp but that’s not enough for a shrimpaholic. I dug in before I got this picture. They were a little stingy with the veggies if you ask me.

I wish I didn’t feel so sick because I would have enjoyed it a lot more. I stopped in the restaurant to see Joe after because he was closing, and rushed home. I literally plopped right into bed with the heating pad and fell asleep at 10:30.

I woke up around the same time today and still felt like I could sleep for days. Luckily Joe was able to sleep in with me and since he was tired, we both skipped the gym. I can’t believe I had a relapse that now feels like the flu! I probably should have taken it a little more easy the past few days.

Tomorrow, there is  the Hoboken Art and Music Festival, which happens twice a year and I don’t want to miss it! It’s so nice to walk around, especially when the weather is nice (70 tomorrow!). Plus, there is a cake ball stand that I can’t get enough of! Carrie and I had plans to goto Brunch at Joe’s restaurant and walk around, so I am resting up all day today so I can go tomorrow.

Luckily, I am having a cleaning lady come on Monday while we are at work. That got me out of doing laundry and cleaning today so I can rest. I still have to run to the grocery store though. How much do you think I would have to pay her to do that too??? 😉

A Few of my Favorite Things: Skincare

 

1. The William Sonoma Lemongrass Ginger hand Soap and Lotion Set is new to my bathroom countertop this year. The smell is light yet vibrant. I first discovered it at a vendor showroom while working and I could not get enough of it.

2. This past Christmas, my boss got me a Kiehl’s set that included Ultra Facial Cream, Lip Balm #1, and Creme de Corps. I knew Kiehl’s was known for great skincare, but these products are my new everyday moisterizers! The face lotion is perfect; just enough moisture without the oily feel. The hand cream is great for my dry hands, since I am always washing them at work or running them under water while doing dishes. The lip balm makes my lips super shiny and it is not sticky at all!

3. Aquaphor Healing Ointment has been a staple in my purse, bathroom, and bedroom nightstand for years. I love putting it on my lips and even cuticles before bed. It’s softens like a gem!

4. I use Aveeno Daily Moisterizing Lotion everyday as soon as I get out of the shower. Nothing keeps away dry peeling winter skin like this does!

5. My goto facewash has always been Paula’s Skin Balancing Cleaner. My mom has always used her products and keeps her Don’t Go To the Cosmetics Counter Without Me book on hand! She reviews every beauty product known to man. I love Paula’s products, though, because they are scent free and gentle.

6. A few years ago, I met Bobbi Brown at a makeup seminar with her team at Bergdorf Goodman. She told me that I have beautiful skin, to stop tanning, and that it is never to early to start using under eye cream. That is when I bought Bobbi’s Hydrating Eye Cream. I have used it since and one jar lasts forever!

7. I spritz on Stella McCartney‘s original scent every morning. I have other perfumes as well, but for some reason I always go back to Stella since I started wearing it 2 years ago. I guess this isn’t “Skincare” per say, but it also doesn’t fit into makeup or hair supplies, so here it will stay. 🙂

I had all intentions of watching the Royal Wedding this morning while on the treadmill, but I ended up forgetting to put it on in my tired state. I did run 3.5 miles and do a leg workout though. I guess I will catch up on clips, pictures, and news all day about it.

I had one more tupperware takealong full of soup, but I couldn’t do it for the third day in a row so I opted for some veggies and Sabra Roasted Pine Nut Hummus! I did, however, grab the last peice of Portuguese bread that I bought for my soup and then thought how good a Morningstar Veggie Burger would taste on it!

I also had this little guy from an office “goodbye” party. Cookie cake is awesome!

I’m super excited about tonight. I am using a Groupon I purchased for a mani-pedi with a friend, and then we are heading to a new Hibachi spot.

Is anyone going to the DMB Caravan this summer? I got tickets today to the Governer’s Island show. So excited!

Jillsberry Dough Boy

Just a forewarning, I’m going recipe crazy in this post. I can’t hold it in any longer! 😉

Last night, Joe and I ate smoothies for dinner. I’m finding that I have become more and more creative with them since I have been forced (hardly) to make smoothies for dinner because they are quick and easy after a late work day. I don’t mind smoothie bowls for dinner and thank god, neither does Joe! I complained to him through texts for the first half of my morning yesterday because of my commute, so I told him that I owed him a big fat smoothie bowl when he gets home. I ended up making this for myself.

  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 scoop (1/2 c?) no salt added low fat cottage cheese
  • 1 large handful spinach
  • 1 c. frozen strawberries
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • pinch xanath gum
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1/2 tbsp. Hershey’s dark cocoa powder
  • Stevia to sweeten

I pretty much through everything but the kitchen sink in there, blended it up, and topped it with Bob’s Red Mill wheat germ and Crazy Richard’s peanut butter. If you leave the natural kind out its nice and gooey and you can ooze it all over the top!

Then, Joe wanted berries, so I was thinking something sweet and vanilla would go perfect.

  • 2 scoops Vanilla protein powder
  • 1/2 cup lactaid milk
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds (he questions these but I told him it would be ok)
  • splash vanilla extract
  • pinch xanath to thicken
  • stevia to sweeten

While I blended this, Joe took out a huge bowl, put a dollop of fat free cool whip, sprinkles, and blackberries. I poured it over the top at his request. The chia seeds almost made it look like vanilla bean! I took out the PB and he didn’t hesitate for a second. Nice topping, I must say! He then said “I know, I know, I won’t eat until you get a picture!” How cute! 😉

I didn’t put the blender away just yet. I wanted to try Kath’s Dough Boy Smoothie in the AM. I took a spin and added the following to the blender;

Jill’s Berry Dough Boy Smoothie

  • 1/2 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • half banana
  • 1/2 cup fresh strawberries
  • sprinkle cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • splash vanilla
  • pinch kosher salt

I blended it up and let it sit overnight in the fridge.

Workout & Breakfast

I did a 30 minute ab workout and a 50 minute incline walk/run interval workout on the treadmill. As soon as I got home I plopped the mixture in the blender with a little bit of milk and poured it in a bowl.

The cinnamon was definitely key. I was a little hesitant, but that is what really makes it taste like dough!

Next time, I think I will change the milk to oats ratio before blending. I should have put more oats/less milk to make it a little thicker, but it was still super yummy! I can already think of a million ways I want these! Chocolate, PB, Banana, the possibilities are endless!

Who’s watching the royal wedding tomorrow? Hopefully it’s on at the gym! Some people I know are going to bars at 6am to watch it. Craziness!

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

Thank goodness I was feeling much better this morning. My nose was stuffy but my head wasn’t a balloon anymore. I was able to get up and complete my favorite upper body workout, that I will post for you guys soon. I also did 25 minutes on the ellytipcal.

I made myself what I call a Vitamin C Antioxidant smoothie after my workout. Perfect for getting over my sickness!

No time for smoothie bowls = drink right out of the glass.

It consisted of:

  • 1/2 cup frozen mango chunks
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1/4 cup almond milk
  • 1/2 cup Tropicana trop 50 orange juice
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder

Slurp! …and yes that is a beer glass. Joe has many as he is in the restaurant/bar business.

Now for my post title. On my way to work I hit traffic and it took me an hour to get to the parking garage that normally takes me 15 minutes. Then, I got on the wrong train because the doors were closing, and the train I take is normally on that track and I noticed after we started moving. Then, when I got off at the next stop to transfer, all trains were suspended! I waited for the bus that never came, and then decided to take a different train to the city, and had to then transfer to the subway. It took me 2 and a 1/2 hours to get to work this morning, so now I am drowning in work after being off yesterday and late today. Phew! That’s my sad story for the day. It reminded me of the movie “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles”. If you haven’t seen it, you should! It’s funny — when it’s not happening to you!

Sick Day

When my alarm went off at 4:45 this morning, I knew that even after a few snoozes there was no way I was getting my butt out of bed because I felt like..well, butt. My head was a balloon and I couldn’t breath out of my nose, at all. I slept until 7 to see if I felt any better, but even going to work then seemed out of the question, so I unfortunately had to use one of my vacation days. We get a lump sum that includes vacation, personal, sick, etc. so I still have enough left.

Joe didn’t have to work today (technically) but he had a few meetings later in the day, so it was nice to sleep in with him. We got up around 10 and saw that it was beautiful outside! Almost 80 degrees today. I decided that laying in bed all day would only make me feel worse, so I attempted the gym to get myself moving a little bit. I ended up completing a 5-4-3-2-1 workout with 5 minutes being incline walking and the 4-3-2-1 minutes being 6.5 to 8.0 speed. I did this for an hour and Joe ran the full hour, followed by a 5 minute cooldown. I usually do about 7.5 miles running the whole hour, so for being sick, 6.35 wasn’t too shabby. Although, somehow I feel I shouldn’t have done this while being sick, but Joe always says “Your body will tell you when it needs a break”, and I felt like I got enough sleep and was well energized!

It was so hot in the gym today, we both looked like wet dogs when we got home. We had to hang our clothes outside to dry. I usually bring a towel but jeez. Time for AC people!

My last mile at the gym consisted of my saying o-ver-night-oats….I couldn’t wait to get home to my dark chocolate oats and add peanut butter for the first time after Lent. I swear, PB tastes even better now!

In tupperware, as I thought I was going to work today

After Joe left for work, I went to the grocery store since our kitchen was bare from my not being home this weekend. I bought the usuals as well as some sick person goodies, but somehow I ended up leaving with a few extras.

I was also excited to find these. My mom told me about both. Pizzelle’s are amazing. They are only 23 calories and 1 gram of fat per “cookie” and they’re perfect for spreading PB on or breaking up in yogurt. Plain with tea is great too! As for the natural PB, I just wanted it, it’s a totally different story than Skippy all natural.

Then, I got crackin’ on the soup. I stole the recipe from Julie over at PB fingers. It was so easy and so yummy! I subbed Carba Nada noodles though. I served it with toasted wheat portuguese bread.

I downed two bowls! Now for some tea and TV. Let’s hope this cold gets what it has coming! No more stuffy nose at 5am! I want to enjoy this beautiful weather. Speaking of which, the tulips in our backyard bloomed and they looked so pretty today as I walked out to goto the store, that I had to snap a pic. I hope you are all well and not sick like me! I do have to say that my sick day wasn’t all that terrible though! 🙂

Sick as a Bunny

It is inevitable. I was sick with the flu last year for Easter and missed 3 days of work. This year, I started getting a terrible sore throat Saturday night and I am still suffering today! Although I made it to work, I may be leaving early because my head feels like a balloon and I am on cup of tea number four!

I always get the post holiday blues the day after a holiday. I think it’s because I don’t live super close to my family, so it is so special when I do get to see them.

Yesterday, we went to my Uncle’s, as we have been every year since my Grandfather had to sell his house to move into assisted living. My mom and her two brothers and all of their kids (my cousins, obviously) and any significant others, usually spend the day together. My Uncle’s girlfriend made yummy homemade ravioli, meatballs, sausage and sauce. My mom brought the potato salad and we had it with ham, kielbasa, salad, bread, etc. It’s kind of a hodge podge of food but it somehow all goes very well together! Dessert was ice cream cake and two kinds of rolls (poppyseed and raspberry cream cheese which was the death of me yesterday). There was also Easter pie, which I try every year, and I don’t like it, every year. It has ricotta, egg, etc. in it. Not a fan!

We mingled for 2 hours or so after we ate, which gave me an opportunity to get a recent picture with my Mom. I miss her all the time! She is probably going to visit for Mother’s day and I can’t wait!

I also got to talk to my Grandfather who I always say is practically my father. He raised me with my Mom (my father is not in my life), and is the most giving man I know. He now has Parkinson’s disease, which is a neurological disease. He has trouble smiling, but I promise – we were happy to see each other! 🙂

I headed back to New Jersey around 4:00 and immediately headed to Joe’s parents to eat more! His two sisters and their kids and his Uncle were there. His mom made homemade ravioli as well. Of course, I had more and finished with cupcakes, chocolate covered peeps, and candy!

I’m sad that Easter is over but at least the weather is starting to clear up! It poured rain last night, but today it is in the 60’s and is supposed to rise throughout the week.

I did a light workout this morning despite my cold. It consisted of 25 minutes of abs and 45 minute intervals of running/incline walking on the treadmill. By running, I mean jogging at 6.5 because I had a coughing fit or two. Oh the joys of being sick. I’m convinced that I haven’t gotten sick in so long because I workout and my body is strong and not as susceptible to infections and viruses. I guess I can deal with a small cold for a few days. Boo.

I didn’t get to go to the grocery store this weekend because I was traveling, so lunch today was leftover ham from easter dinner on a sandwich thin with Nayonaise. I had no complaints about this. I enjoyed broccoli slaw on the side which is not pictured.

Yum! I am sure I will be downing some leftover chocolate covered peeps soon, too! When I’m sick, I usually find that I eat more, rather then less. I guess that’s a good thing?
