Sugar Intake

Happy Friday! I always feel so productive on Friday and I figured out why. First, let’s cover my workout and breakfast (x2). Yeah, that’s right.

Today is leg day again! I feel like I just got over my extremely sore glutes and hammies.

  • 20 minute ab workout
  • 32 minutes on the treadmill: 3.5 miles
  • 6 sets of 10-15 reps assisted squats: 50 lbs
  • 6 sets of 12-18 reps deadlifts:
  • seated (machine) calves raises: 5 sets of 20 reps at 20 lbs.
  • hip adduction machine: 4 sets of 20 reps at 100 lbs.
  • leg curls: 4 sets of 15 at 20 lbs.

Time to eat! I am starting to like my new habit of waiting until I leave for work to make my smoothie (in my new cup!). It makes my car ride more enjoyable.

This morning’s mixture was extra thick and took longer than usual to finish during my commute.

  • 5 ice cubes
  • 5 frozen strawberries
  • a few peices of frozen banana
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1 heaping scoop of vanilla SunWarrior protein powder
  • 1 tbsp. Hershey’s special dark cocoa powder
  • a handful of spinach

For some reason it was extremely thick, no qualms here! Maybe it was just the ice/milk to powder ratio.

My second breakfast that I usually eat about two hours after my smoothie when I get to work, and is usually a Vitatop, was extra special today too! Last night I decided to mix up some overnight oats in a jar in a recently devoured jar of PB.

In the mix went:

  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1 scoop vanilla SunWarrior
  • 1/2 fresh banana, mashed
  • sprinkle cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • pinch salt
  • 1 cup of almond milk (or enough to mix it up)

This morning I added some more milk to soften it up and 1 tbsp. chia seeds because I totally forgot last night!

I finished it and practically licked the jar clean while I was having my productive morning at work. I think that I get a lot done on Fridays because I have less stress. Friday is just an overall carefree day and knowing that the weekend is only a few hours away gives me that extra push to complete all my work. I guess it is a good thing.

Sugar Intake

I feel like lately, between treats at work,

Cookie cake for my co-workers promotion to another area

..and all of the fruit (strawberries, bananas), sweeteners (agave, honey, and stevia) that I use for my smoothies, I have been consuming so much sugar. I eat nanners like they are going out of style! Joe brought home 4 bunches that were extra from his restaurant, which are pictured in the background below. Bad news, but more to freeze for smoothies! Last night I was craving ice cream so I went and bought my favorite substitute, Arctic Zero.

This stuff is amazing. Check out the stats:

Of course there is organic cane sugar in it, along with all other natural ingredients like xanath for thickening. But of course, I topped it with nanners, whip, and sprinks.

This clearly added to my sugar intake. I decided to do a little research on fruit sugars, specifically bananas.

Bananas (source)

  • You don’t need to eat bananas for the potassium! (Although it is present in bananas, potassium is the predominant nutrient among most all fruits and vegetables.)
  • Bananas are high in sugar, so they should not be eaten if you have blood sugar problems.
  • Don’t eat bananas on an empty stomach; combining them with a bit of protein will help to normalize the insulin response caused by the sugar in the banana.
  • Green-tipped bananas are better for your health than over-ripe bananas.
  • On a side note: Because bananas are so popular, rainforests are often destroyed to make way for banana plantations.

Wel it’s a good thing I pretty much only eat them with protein (shakes, PB, etc) and that I contribute to rainforest distinction. Great.

I also found this to be interesting. Bananas can affect your mood. I mean, I know that bananas make me happy! But so does peanut butter, and cake, and chocolate. I think bananas get a bad rep because of the carb content, too, but at the end of the day it is a peice of fruit and it’s only 100 calories. It’s better than eating a bag of candy!

Anyway, obviously natural sugars are better for you than artificial sweeteners and your body processes them differently. Sugar is still sugar, though. In leui of my sugar concerns, I opted out of Dunkin Donuts free donut day offer and got my usual starbucks coffee instead.

It’s Friiiday Friday Friiiday! Does anyone else listen to Madison on Alt Nation? Cracks me up….

Last night, I was up late talking with Joe about  our relationship. We needed to talk some things out that have been going on lately and we have come to the conclusion that communication is so important and we both need to be aware of things and not become complacent. Our work schedules are somewhat conflicting, so we need to enjoy every minute we have together and cease the moment.

Carpe Diem!

I feel so much better that we talked! However, when my alarm went off this morning I was so tired I wanted to cry. I decided to sleep in a little and skip my ab routine. I pushed myself to get up and atleast do some cardio and I ended up busting out 5 miles in 45 minutes. Yay for me. I made a protein shake with my new arrivals from Netrition, which I’ll be covering reviews on soon I am sure.

On another complacency note, my teammate got promoted and is leaving to go to her new area in 2 weeks. We are all happy for her but sad she is leaving us. She has been in the position for two years and I think it is great that the company I work for likes to promote within and move people around frequently to stop people from becoming complacent in their position. I am a bit nervous about where her workload will go before we find someone to fill the spot, though. We shall see.

Today’s lunch was a bit random, but very good! Last night I cut up a green squash and covered it with olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. I roasted it for 20 minutes on 350 degrees.

I love my veggies, but the main course of lunch was much more exciting. I had one more Morningstar veggie burger left so I decided to bring that with a Pepperidge Farm whole wheat sandwich thin, the rest of an avocado from my tacos that I had the last 3 days, and goat cheese that I totally forgot I had. Pepperidge Farm thins are so much better than Arnold’s! They are thicker and don’t cause as many crumbs. Anyone else agree?? In any event, this was a very interesting and yummy combo!

After work I have to stop and get a few things for my best friend’s wedding shower this weekend. I am in her wedding in July and we are throwing her a shower this weekend at her sister’s house, which is 2 1/2 hours away. I have to prep some mixed drinks and food and figure out a way to store and and travel with all of it Saturday morning! This should be interesting. 🙂

Comfort Zone

First thing’s first. My “I haven’t grocery shopped because I was sick and I still have a weird appetite” lunch (in honor of Cinco de Mayo):

Looks just like the box, right? haha. It was pretty tasty though. Kashi is the only frozen entree I will eat.

Now, onto my thoughts….

Being sick and having a total routine-breaking week has really made me realize a lot of things. Some important ones are:

  • Work goes on without me
  • I really need to let myself rest when I am sick
  • Missing the gym won’t kill me (or add on any pounds!)
  • I can break my routine one in a while
  • My eating habits change fiercely when I am not working out

I had a lot of time to think while laying in bed for 4 days straight. I think what I really concluded is that I am such a routine oriented person. I get flustered when I am thrown off course and most of the time I can only think of the negatives. I have my comfort zone and when it is broken, or asked to be broken, I have trouble accepting.

I am not having that “happy weight” realization that some people go through after years of struggling with exercise/food/weight issues (props to all that have overcome, though). I simply have become aware of the fact that a few days off the gym doesn’t take off all of the work I have been putting in. I didn’t have the same appetite, not only because I was sick, but because I normally burn atleast 500 calories before my day even begins, so I normally need more to compensate. However, I didn’t cease to eat Joe’s Mom’s birthday cake for dinner two nights in a row. I hate taking sick (vacation) days, not being able to run, and being bored in bed all day with an appetite for nothing but carbs.  But, I figured that I will revel in my time off and enjoy it!

I decided that since I am still recovering, I am going to take the rest of the week off from the gym. I want to make sure that I am fully recovered because I don’t want to relapse. I have made that mistake too many times before because I was anxious to get back. Plus, I think I’ll have so much energy by next week that maybe I’ll be able to run some extra miles! It also prepares me for July when I will be missing another week for a Vacation (my friend’s Bachelorette party in St. John’s).

As far as work, I am lucky to have great co-worker who picked up the slack while I was out. I wasn’t as overwhelmed as I thought I would be. Another bad habit is that I stress out over things that end up being so small. It’s something I’m working on! 🙂

Do you have a routine? How do you feel when it is altered for any reason?
