Berry Warrior

Yesterday was just as I suspected; a long busy day. It continues today which is why I am so looking forward to a half day tomorrow and Monday off.

I got to the gym this morning and I felt like my eyes were barely open. I didn’t go to sleep that late but I think towards the end of the week my getting up at 5:00 am habits catch up to me, and by Friday I am just ready for a day to sleep in. I finished a 25 minute ab workout and was walking up the stairs to the treadmill and tripped like an idiot. I didn’t just trip, I seriously fell continuously up 3 steps, spilling my water all over, and obviously catching the attention of everyone around me. I completely lost feeling in my legs and felt like I had no control and couldn’t even catch myself. It was weird, maybe I need to take an extra five minutes in the morning to wake myself up. Anyway, I obviously kept walking like nothing happened like any other normal person would. Nothing happened, I didn’t trip, you’re seeing things.

50 minutes later I was more than awake. I did some sprinting and incline fast paced walking intervals while thinking about my breakfast, of course. I don’t eat before I go to the gym and I haven’t in almost 2 years. I get up so early that I just don’t feel like eating, plus Joe told me something about insulin levels spiking and burning more fat…something I have been meaning to google. Regardless, I always have a huge protein shake as soon as I walk in the door. I used one of my new purchases from Netrition; Sun Warrior!

I’m not going to lie, I have been using it but haven’t told you so I could save it for a review. I feel like it’s an acquired taste. And by that I mean the first time you taste it it’s weird/different but after that it becomes an addiction and I crave it. Maybe it’s my body craving raw vegan food because it’s all natural and good for you. Who knows, but this stuff is good.

In a blender went:

  • 1 and 1/2 scoops Sun Warrior (vanilla)
  • A large uncounted handful of fresh strawberries/blueberries/blackberries
  • Half a frozen banana
  • 1/2 c vanilla unsweetened almond milk
  • a splash of pure vanilla
  • a tbsp of honey

All blended up

This turned out amazing.

As I was packing my daily VitaTop I remembered something. I decided yesterday that I am nominating myself to be VitaFan of the month on Facebook. That’s right, I’ve been buying these things since the first day Hungry Girl announced this new product. It was years ago and I have come to the point that I need to order in bulk from the website because I eat one everyday when I get to work.

Please give me some ideas for a picture that is not as cheesy as this.

I also finished Carrots ‘N’ Cake, the book,  this morning on the train so I will definitely be reviewing that, hopefully this weekend!

Complacency

Last night, I was up late talking with Joe about  our relationship. We needed to talk some things out that have been going on lately and we have come to the conclusion that communication is so important and we both need to be aware of things and not become complacent. Our work schedules are somewhat conflicting, so we need to enjoy every minute we have together and cease the moment.

Carpe Diem!

I feel so much better that we talked! However, when my alarm went off this morning I was so tired I wanted to cry. I decided to sleep in a little and skip my ab routine. I pushed myself to get up and atleast do some cardio and I ended up busting out 5 miles in 45 minutes. Yay for me. I made a protein shake with my new arrivals from Netrition, which I’ll be covering reviews on soon I am sure.

On another complacency note, my teammate got promoted and is leaving to go to her new area in 2 weeks. We are all happy for her but sad she is leaving us. She has been in the position for two years and I think it is great that the company I work for likes to promote within and move people around frequently to stop people from becoming complacent in their position. I am a bit nervous about where her workload will go before we find someone to fill the spot, though. We shall see.

Lunch

Today’s lunch was a bit random, but very good! Last night I cut up a green squash and covered it with olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. I roasted it for 20 minutes on 350 degrees.

I love my veggies, but the main course of lunch was much more exciting. I had one more Morningstar veggie burger left so I decided to bring that with a Pepperidge Farm whole wheat sandwich thin, the rest of an avocado from my tacos that I had the last 3 days, and goat cheese that I totally forgot I had. Pepperidge Farm thins are so much better than Arnold’s! They are thicker and don’t cause as many crumbs. Anyone else agree?? In any event, this was a very interesting and yummy combo!

After work I have to stop and get a few things for my best friend’s wedding shower this weekend. I am in her wedding in July and we are throwing her a shower this weekend at her sister’s house, which is 2 1/2 hours away. I have to prep some mixed drinks and food and figure out a way to store and and travel with all of it Saturday morning! This should be interesting. 🙂

Restock

I get really excited when it’s time to order from Netrition. I needed a restock on a few things, and then I throw in a few extras to get to $200 so I get the 5% discount. They ship for $4.95 flat, no matter how much you spend, and it comes in like two days. It’s awesome. They have Joe’s turbo teas and pure protein shakes and I finally ordered the Sun Warrior protein powder I have been reading about everywhere. We always have Isopure on hand but I really wanted to try this. I got some pure vanilla because I’ve been adding it to my smoothies. Lastly, I threw in some MaraNatha almond butter because really, you can never have enough nut butter around the house. As usual, I got the free offer –  a gym towel. Now I have three! Good for those sweaty runs.

Workout & Breakfast

This morning I had to be quick because I had an early appointment at the foot doctor. I did a 15 minute mat abdominal workout followed by 45 minutes on the treadmill (plus a 5 minute cooldown) covering about 5 miles.

I made a yummy green monster this morning by combining;

  • 3/4 frozen banana
  • 3/4 cup almond milk
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • stevia
  • 2 large handfuls of spinach

Of course I had to have a few spoonfuls of PB.

My foot doctor is going to check with my insurance and I’ll probably have another set of orthotics made. He didn’t want to take them from me because he said he knew I wouldn’t stop running for two weeks so I would probably hurt myself. He is probably right. So, I have a follow up next week to take molds and get another pair, then have the old ones refurbished.

Today is another rainy and foggy day in the NYC/metro area. Can you spot the Empire State Building going into the clouds next to the raunchy graffiti?

Yes, this is the nasty view I have while sitting in Holland tunnel traffic on my way to the train to goto work. I hope there is nicer weather out there somewhere for you guys!

Nutella Chocolate Chip Cookies

Being that I gave up peanut butter for lent, Nutella is a perfect substitute for indulgence. Nutella chocolate chip cookies were baked last night after dinner and you better believe that Joe came home and had a sprinkle massacre with them (and cool whip). I used this recipe that Courtney fixed a little bit, and they were perfect!

Nutella Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp of salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) softened butter
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup Nutella
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Mix together flour, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda and salt, and set aside.
  2. Cream together butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Mix in Nutella and vanilla extract. Add in egg and mix until combined.
  3. Add flour mixture and mix until just incorporated. Stir in chocolate chips.
  4. *Optional step: Chill dough for 1/2-1 hour. (It can make a big difference in the cookies)
  5. Drop tablespoons of dough 2 inches apart onto parchment lined baking sheets. Bake at 350 for about 10 minutes until the edges look set. Cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes then carefully remove to cooling racks
The cinnamon is key! Nutella cookies are AMAZING!

Moist & Chewy!
After dessert was done, I did some online shopping. Well, it all involved food in a sense. I ordered protein shakes from Netrition and a toaster oven, crock pot, mixer, food processor, and measuring cups from the Bloomingdale’s Home Sale. I couldn’t resist!
Today…I will conquer Spring clothes clean out! I will probably conquer some pizza, too…as it is Sunday!

Back on Track

I was unable to post yesterday due to a crazy day at work. I have those sometimes, or a lot of times… Anyway, it felt so good to work off all of that icebox cake the last two mornings.

Monday Workout

I usually wake up between 5:00 and 5:30 AM, depending on my workout, my day at work, and if Joe is driving me to the train or not. I usually drive, park and walk myself, but if he decides to go into work early with me, it saves me some time! Luckily, Joe woke up with me, and my Monday workout is usually just shaking off the rust from the weekend. We did Abs for 30 minutes, which always consists of:

  • 2 Lower Ab excercies
  • 2 Upper Ab exercises
  • 2 Oblique exercises

Then, I headed to the treadmill, which is unusual for a Monday, while Joe headed to the ellyptical. I tend to stick to the ellyptical as my body is still trying to digest Sunday. I decided to do intervals of jogging and incline walking instead. I did 2 minutes at 6.5, no incline, and 2 minutes of 4.5 with a 9.0 incline. It varied a little but basically followed through the 30 minutes. I then hopped on the ellyptical for 20 minutes at “25” since I was already sweated up! I definitly felt like this workout was better than my normal Monday routine. I need this after the weekend.

Breakfast

Breakfast was a xanath gum connundrum! Yes, I attempted xanath gum in my shake for the first time, and when people say a “pinch”, they mean it! A little goes a long way. I through my usuals in a blender and added a tablespoon, bad idea! It is a thickening agent, which is great for shakes–in small doses!

The blender basically stopped dead in its tracks and I had to scoop out the thick mess inside. I decided to grab a shower and try again after, being that I was already running late. Joe just laughed at me as he made his PB2 and Protein Powder shake. We typically have two 7.5 lb buckets of Isopure hanging around–chocolate and vanilla, that I order from Netrition. I like Netrition because they always ship so quick, for only $4.95 and everything is always right! Plus, you get 5% off with orders of $200 or more and I always get something free (towel, t-shirt, water bottle so far)!

I attempted the same after I got ready, and took it in a to go bottle for the ride. It came out just right with a “pinch”! I also wanted to share the slight disconnect at my daily Starbucks stop. My mom’s worst nightmare and why she did not name me Gillian with a G.

Lunch

I bought a lot of new products at the grocery store this weekend since I have been bored with my lunches, so I was excited to dig in to what I had packed because it was such a crazy day! I brought turkey with Nayonaise (dijon style) on a whole wheat sandwich thin, with a side of Mann’s Broccoli Slaw and  Annie’s Lite Gingerly dressing.

I ended up having a late night at work and was excited to just get home and get back into bed! I made a quick protein shake with a banana before doing so.

Today’s Workout

Tuesdays are a love/hate day for me, because that describes my relationship with running. Joe got me into the habit of doing a long-run day, which for me has gone up to 7.7 miles at most. I always wake up dreading it, but a few minutes in I love it! I preceded my run with a 20 minute one prop ab workout (a mat, on the floor).

Today I ran 7.53m in 65 minutes, with a warum up and cooldown baked into that time. It was a good day because I was able to interval a bit (sprinting at 8, 8.5, and 9, throughout the workout for 30 second), while keeping at a steady 7.0. I had surgery on both of my hips, which I will save for a later post, that sometimes defers my running.

Today was the first day that it was warm when I walked out the door at 5:15. I usually just run out in shorts no matter how cold it is, but today I didn’t get that chill! It is a rainy-ish day, but it’s atleast close to 60 degrees. Spring, finally! I always feel like my workout is intensified in the heat! I definitely sweat (sweated?) more than usual today. Even after I got out of the shower and got into my robe, I still had to open the bathroom door when I was blow drying my hair. That normally only happens in the middle of summer!

For breakfast, I made a shake with chocolate protein powder, a banana, and chocolate almond milk. It’s been my recent kick. Well, bananas really have been. I also made overnight oats (dry oats, almond milk, 1 tsp. dark chocolate cocoa, and strawberries) last night that I brought to work to eat as a snack. I always make sure to eat extra calories on days that I run (good calories, of course)!

Lunch

Lunch was a goat cheese (I use Chavrie), turkey, and spinach on a whole wheat wrap with carrots. Sorry, I bit into it before I took the picture! I will get in the habit of taking more pictures of my food once I get this all up and running, but for your enjoyment I have my iPhone photos, for now!

Now, I have to finish up my day at work. Enjoy your day! 🙂
