Sugar Intake

Happy Friday! I always feel so productive on Friday and I figured out why. First, let’s cover my workout and breakfast (x2). Yeah, that’s right.

Workout

Today is leg day again! I feel like I just got over my extremely sore glutes and hammies.

  • 20 minute ab workout
  • 32 minutes on the treadmill: 3.5 miles
  • 6 sets of 10-15 reps assisted squats: 50 lbs
  • 6 sets of 12-18 reps deadlifts:
  • seated (machine) calves raises: 5 sets of 20 reps at 20 lbs.
  • hip adduction machine: 4 sets of 20 reps at 100 lbs.
  • leg curls: 4 sets of 15 at 20 lbs.

Time to eat! I am starting to like my new habit of waiting until I leave for work to make my smoothie (in my new cup!). It makes my car ride more enjoyable.

This morning’s mixture was extra thick and took longer than usual to finish during my commute.

  • 5 ice cubes
  • 5 frozen strawberries
  • a few peices of frozen banana
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1 heaping scoop of vanilla SunWarrior protein powder
  • 1 tbsp. Hershey’s special dark cocoa powder
  • a handful of spinach

For some reason it was extremely thick, no qualms here! Maybe it was just the ice/milk to powder ratio.

My second breakfast that I usually eat about two hours after my smoothie when I get to work, and is usually a Vitatop, was extra special today too! Last night I decided to mix up some overnight oats in a jar in a recently devoured jar of PB.

In the mix went:

  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1 scoop vanilla SunWarrior
  • 1/2 fresh banana, mashed
  • sprinkle cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • pinch salt
  • 1 cup of almond milk (or enough to mix it up)

This morning I added some more milk to soften it up and 1 tbsp. chia seeds because I totally forgot last night!

I finished it and practically licked the jar clean while I was having my productive morning at work. I think that I get a lot done on Fridays because I have less stress. Friday is just an overall carefree day and knowing that the weekend is only a few hours away gives me that extra push to complete all my work. I guess it is a good thing.

Sugar Intake

I feel like lately, between treats at work,

..and all of the fruit (strawberries, bananas), sweeteners (agave, honey, and stevia) that I use for my smoothies, I have been consuming so much sugar. I eat nanners like they are going out of style! Joe brought home 4 bunches that were extra from his restaurant, which are pictured in the background below. Bad news, but more to freeze for smoothies! Last night I was craving ice cream so I went and bought my favorite substitute, Arctic Zero.

Of course there is organic cane sugar in it, along with all other natural ingredients like xanath for thickening. But of course, I topped it with nanners, whip, and sprinks.

This clearly added to my sugar intake. I decided to do a little research on fruit sugars, specifically bananas.

Bananas (source)

  • You don’t need to eat bananas for the potassium! (Although it is present in bananas, potassium is the predominant nutrient among most all fruits and vegetables.)
  • Bananas are high in sugar, so they should not be eaten if you have blood sugar problems.
  • Don’t eat bananas on an empty stomach; combining them with a bit of protein will help to normalize the insulin response caused by the sugar in the banana.
  • Green-tipped bananas are better for your health than over-ripe bananas.
  • On a side note: Because bananas are so popular, rainforests are often destroyed to make way for banana plantations.

Wel it’s a good thing I pretty much only eat them with protein (shakes, PB, etc) and that I contribute to rainforest distinction. Great.

I also found this to be interesting. Bananas can affect your mood. I mean, I know that bananas make me happy! But so does peanut butter, and cake, and chocolate. I think bananas get a bad rep because of the carb content, too, but at the end of the day it is a peice of fruit and it’s only 100 calories. It’s better than eating a bag of candy!

Anyway, obviously natural sugars are better for you than artificial sweeteners and your body processes them differently. Sugar is still sugar, though. In leui of my sugar concerns, I opted out of Dunkin Donuts free donut day offer and got my usual starbucks coffee instead.

Afternoon Snack Mishap

It is pouring in NYC right now. I braved the rain anyway because I really wanted to use my Starbucks free petit coupon.

I had all intentions of the getting the tiramisu cake pop until they told me they were out. Booooo! I asked for a tall pike, a lemon square (instead), and to add $25 to my gold card. First, she ran the card like 3 times to get the balance on it. (I will have a fit if I check my balance and it is $75). Then, she rang up a lemon pound cake. I told her that was not what I wanted while I was showing her the free petit coupon, hoping she would understand what I did want. She waved her hand and told me to hold on. Of course, she rang up the petit without using the coupon and had to go back and void the whole thing. Meanwhile, there is a line out the door. So just for my troubles I swiped a few honey packets when she walked away (why do they keep them behind the counter?).

Starbucks is giving out free coffee if you bring a reusable mug in honor of Earth Day. Did you get yours? I sure did! I enjoyed my bold coffee with a Banana Nut Vitatop!

 

Also, Happy Good Friday! I have to pack tonight to head home to my Mom’s house in Pennsylvania tomorrow for Easter weekend. Joe has to work, so he can’t come. I wish we could spend Easter together, but I am also very excited to see my Mom because it has been over a month since I’ve seen her! Only two more days until I can shove peanut butter down my throat!

Yay for Friday!

4-3-2-1

I found the 5-4-3-2-1 workout at Iowa Girl Eats and thought it would be a perfect alternative for me. I wasn’t feeling running this morning, but after a quick ab workout, I got runnin’ and was on a roll. I modified it to 4-3-2-1 by doing 4 minutes at 6.5, 3 at 7.0, 2 at 7.5, and 1 at 8.0 for 60 minutes with a 5 minute cool down. Let me tell you, it is a lot harder than it sounds! Then again, my legs were still sore from 90+ squats on Friday. Breakfast, as usual was a quick smoothie. Today I went with my craving for honey banana.

Today started out great. I had an awesome workout. I passed pretty tulips bloomed in our backyard on my way out. There was No traffic on my way to work. Why? I don’t know. But I like it. The day ahead always looks more positive when there’s no or little traffic. Sad but true!

It was also free drink day for me at Starbucks. Gotta love the gold card! You better believe I went with the $6 skinny caramel macchiato! For all the money I spend at Starbucks! I enjoyed it with chocolate overnight oats.

Today is my Friday!

I woke up this morning feeling tired, since I was up late watching some stupid movie on TV with Joe. It was 5:15 and I knew I had to get my butt up and push Joe along too because we always run late on Wednesdays. Thankfully, he had to go in early today so he got up with me.

We did our normal Wednesday routine, which includes 30 minutes of Abs, upper body routine (shoulder, back, chest, triceps and biceps) for about 30 minutes, and then 30 minutes on the elliptical. I usually go on this crazy machine that I call the “moon walker” because it feels like you are doing just that. I feel like I have to work harder and I work up a better sweat. The “regular” ellypticals (well, certain ones), lose resistance when you remove your hands from the sensors. ABSURD I tell you! I can’t stand it, so I refuse to use.

Before I left for the gym, I cut up a banana and froze it because I had an idea of what I wanted for breakfast. As you know, I have been on a banana kick lately, and I saw this concoction on Julie’s page, which made me salivate, a little. I combined the following in the blender:

  • Frozen Banana
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 pinch xanath gum

As soon as I poured it into my cup, I knew I got the exact amount of xanath needed to make a perfectly thick and creamy shake. Words cannot do justice to the consistency of this shake. It was every bit of creamy banana-ness I could have hoped for, especially after topping it off with some honey. It was Bah-Nanas, as Rachel Zoe would say. I have one banana left this week and I have a feeling it’s life will end in a blender with the ingredients above. Unfortunately because I was running late, I didn’t snap a picture, but I will share with you the obnoxious tubs that somehow end up staying on our kitchen counter at all times. I am determined to find pretty containers that will store all 7.5 lb. of chocolate and vanilla.

Joe snacked on his overnight oats topped with berries that I made him last night, while I finished my shake and hopped in the shower.

  • 1 cup oats (I use quaker)
  • ½ cup milk (Lactaid for Joe)
  • 1 tbsp. Hershey’s special dark cocoa powder
  • 1 packet of splenda for sweetening
  • 2 scoops vanilla protein powder

 He raved about this the last two days and I have a feeling I’ll be making these for him every morning now.

I am a happy girl at work today because I have off tomorrow and Friday! I am going to Atlantic City with some of the managers and bartenders from Joe’s restaurant to attend the wine show (and stay at the Borgata/eat dinner –all payed for by one of his super nice Vendors!).

I’m off to eat my over night oats (made with Greek Yogurt, Berries, a pinch of dark cocoa powder, and Agave Nectar to sweeten), paired with my daily Starbucks (drug). Have a great Wednesday! 🙂

Back on Track

I was unable to post yesterday due to a crazy day at work. I have those sometimes, or a lot of times… Anyway, it felt so good to work off all of that icebox cake the last two mornings.

Monday Workout

I usually wake up between 5:00 and 5:30 AM, depending on my workout, my day at work, and if Joe is driving me to the train or not. I usually drive, park and walk myself, but if he decides to go into work early with me, it saves me some time! Luckily, Joe woke up with me, and my Monday workout is usually just shaking off the rust from the weekend. We did Abs for 30 minutes, which always consists of:

  • 2 Lower Ab excercies
  • 2 Upper Ab exercises
  • 2 Oblique exercises

Then, I headed to the treadmill, which is unusual for a Monday, while Joe headed to the ellyptical. I tend to stick to the ellyptical as my body is still trying to digest Sunday. I decided to do intervals of jogging and incline walking instead. I did 2 minutes at 6.5, no incline, and 2 minutes of 4.5 with a 9.0 incline. It varied a little but basically followed through the 30 minutes. I then hopped on the ellyptical for 20 minutes at “25” since I was already sweated up! I definitly felt like this workout was better than my normal Monday routine. I need this after the weekend.

Breakfast

Breakfast was a xanath gum connundrum! Yes, I attempted xanath gum in my shake for the first time, and when people say a “pinch”, they mean it! A little goes a long way. I through my usuals in a blender and added a tablespoon, bad idea! It is a thickening agent, which is great for shakes–in small doses!

The blender basically stopped dead in its tracks and I had to scoop out the thick mess inside. I decided to grab a shower and try again after, being that I was already running late. Joe just laughed at me as he made his PB2 and Protein Powder shake. We typically have two 7.5 lb buckets of Isopure hanging around–chocolate and vanilla, that I order from Netrition. I like Netrition because they always ship so quick, for only $4.95 and everything is always right! Plus, you get 5% off with orders of $200 or more and I always get something free (towel, t-shirt, water bottle so far)!

I attempted the same after I got ready, and took it in a to go bottle for the ride. It came out just right with a “pinch”! I also wanted to share the slight disconnect at my daily Starbucks stop. My mom’s worst nightmare and why she did not name me Gillian with a G.

Lunch

I bought a lot of new products at the grocery store this weekend since I have been bored with my lunches, so I was excited to dig in to what I had packed because it was such a crazy day! I brought turkey with Nayonaise (dijon style) on a whole wheat sandwich thin, with a side of Mann’s Broccoli Slaw and  Annie’s Lite Gingerly dressing.

I ended up having a late night at work and was excited to just get home and get back into bed! I made a quick protein shake with a banana before doing so.

Today’s Workout

Tuesdays are a love/hate day for me, because that describes my relationship with running. Joe got me into the habit of doing a long-run day, which for me has gone up to 7.7 miles at most. I always wake up dreading it, but a few minutes in I love it! I preceded my run with a 20 minute one prop ab workout (a mat, on the floor).

Today I ran 7.53m in 65 minutes, with a warum up and cooldown baked into that time. It was a good day because I was able to interval a bit (sprinting at 8, 8.5, and 9, throughout the workout for 30 second), while keeping at a steady 7.0. I had surgery on both of my hips, which I will save for a later post, that sometimes defers my running.

Today was the first day that it was warm when I walked out the door at 5:15. I usually just run out in shorts no matter how cold it is, but today I didn’t get that chill! It is a rainy-ish day, but it’s atleast close to 60 degrees. Spring, finally! I always feel like my workout is intensified in the heat! I definitely sweat (sweated?) more than usual today. Even after I got out of the shower and got into my robe, I still had to open the bathroom door when I was blow drying my hair. That normally only happens in the middle of summer!

For breakfast, I made a shake with chocolate protein powder, a banana, and chocolate almond milk. It’s been my recent kick. Well, bananas really have been. I also made overnight oats (dry oats, almond milk, 1 tsp. dark chocolate cocoa, and strawberries) last night that I brought to work to eat as a snack. I always make sure to eat extra calories on days that I run (good calories, of course)!

Lunch

Lunch was a goat cheese (I use Chavrie), turkey, and spinach on a whole wheat wrap with carrots. Sorry, I bit into it before I took the picture! I will get in the habit of taking more pictures of my food once I get this all up and running, but for your enjoyment I have my iPhone photos, for now!
